Indigenous Culture

The many chapters of Indigenous culture are represented throughout the region and brought into focus at the Back O' Bourke.

The Bourke Shire overlays the traditional lands of four major nations. The Ngemba (Ngiyaampa) is one of many tribes that resided in the township of Bourke, and their country stretches south and east through the Cobar penne-plain. Known as 'stone country people', the Ngemba/Ngiyaampa cared for some of the most significant sites in the region. In addition, Gundabooka National Park boasts significant cave-art sites and Aboriginal cultural heritage.
