Road trips & 4WD

If you've come this far, you may as well have a look around, and let's face it, Bourke is great, but you came for the Back O' Bourke bit, right?

Several identified 'mud map' tracks around Bourke can put you in touch with the sense of Back O' Bourke and the story of the real outback. The best way to get a feel for Back O' Bourke is to think of the town as the centre of a large-spoked wheel, as the hub. You can base yourself around Bourke, take a breather, and get a feel for the country, then take a few day trips or an overnighter and get a feel for the bush.

Within a (relatively) short drive of Bourke, you can reach eight iconic villages, with any number of interchangeable routes and tracks to make each trip your own. Iconic outback hotels and rich history are waiting to welcome you. Engaging locals and the sort of straight-up Australian characters you can only find once you leave the beaten track - that's what Back O' Bourke is all about!

There are rivers, lakes, mountains, and wetlands to visit along the way. National Parks give you full access to the country, and there are numerous well-appointed station stays to accommodate you for the real Back O' Bourke experience.
