MARITIME TRAIL

Getting there:

  1. Start at the North Bourke Bridge. Set the tripometer.
  2. Travel 400 metres before turning left onto the dirt River Rd. Cross ’Big Billabong’.
  3. 3.9km - from the bridge, turn left at the ’Maritime Park’ sign. Please shut the gate. This old golf course is used on occasion, to the surprise of most!
  4. Take the right fork and at 4.8km, you will be by the river, opposite Rotary Park and the historic wharf. This is the site of the old punt crossing. Take time out to explore the riverbank.
  5. Continue along the track, stopping at all the information signs, which tell the stories of the wharves of the Port of Bourke, the shearers, the paddle steamers, the Ngemba Tribe, the explorers, the Darling-Baaka River, and the ‘P.S Wave’.
  6. 5.5km - continue along the track, and you will see the relics of the P.S. Wave. If you sit still here for a while you may spot Herons, Galahs, Major Mitchell Cockatoo's, Kangaroos and other wildlife, especially at dusk.
  7. Follow the track around to the left and back to the gate.
